Plastic is becoming a bigger problem each day as it is one of the most dangerous creations of the humankind. It is not biodegradable and it can harm wildlife all over the world. However, some supermarkets in Asia have become more aware of this problem so instead of using plastic bags they started using banana leaves.
Plastic can seriously harm marine creatures. We often hear or read news about whales that died because they ingested tons of plastic waste. Other marine creatures also suffer due to the tons of plastic we throw in the oceans each day.
Even though it is a serious problem, the use of plastic is slowly becoming a thing of the past in several countries. Some take steps by charging for the plastic bags, but since that price is affordable, there is a need for a more radical approach.
Such approach was done by Vietnamese and Thai supermarkets that started using banana leaves instead of plastic bags.
The Thai supermarket Rimping in Chiangmai was the first to start replacing plastic bags this way. This initiative was shared on social media and it quickly became viral. People wanted to know more about this unusual way and the several other supermarkets from Vietnam followed the example.
A spokesperson for Lotte Market in Ho Chi Minh City said they are doing this as an experiment but they are hoping to spread it all around the country. They also hope the banana leaves will be useful for carrying meat and other vegetables too.
The VN express described this as a step in the right direction, and one that is necessary right now. They also said Vietnam is the fourth country in the world on the ocean plastic polluting nations rank.
Another alternative to using banana leaves are biodegradable bags made from corn which are currently being used by Big C supermarkets.
We hope this is just one step that will lead to the final eradication of plastic use.
